Title The Earth and Moon Full Description During its flight. This is from the Galileo spacecraft. It returned images of the Earth and Moon, separately, and later combined to generate this view. The Galileo spacecraft took the images in 1992 while en route to explore the Jupiter system in 1995-1997. This image shows a partial view of the Earth centered on the Pacific Ocean about latitude 20 degrees south, and you can see the west coast of South America can be observed. You can also observe the Carribbean. One can see the swirling white cloud patterns which indicate storms in the southeast Pacific. You can see the Tycho impact basin, as the bright ray crater at the bottom of the moon. The lunar dark areas you see, are lava rock filled impact basins. This picture contains same scale, and relative color and albedo images of both the Earth and Moon. To capture this, false colors through the use of the 1-micron filter as red, 727 -nm filter as green, and a violet filter as blue. The Galileo project, is managed for NASA's Office of Space Science, by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Great thanks for to NASA for the use of such beautiful images.
